~this is in ubuntu 12.10~
hey guys, if you were like me and decided to install the new massively-famed nvidia 310 driver from their site only to watch your desktop blow up spectacularly, then this is the place to be
first off, if you dont have a second computer right next to the one your fixing, you should print off what im telling you, as theres some obvious command-work going to be done (as thats all your computer can do now).
restart your computer holding down shift.
you should get into the boot loader.
select to run ubuntu with other options
then select the latest kernal with (recovery mode) stamped on it.
after confusing letters, select to drop down as root
now copy these commands exactly.
1.
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /
-- this is to let your drive write as well as read, as you might get stuck with read-only
2.
-- this will get your internet up.
3. depending on what nvidia driver you had, do one of these things, if you are unsure, just run them all.
Code:
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current-updates
sudo apt-get remove nvidia-experimental-304
sudo nvidia-installer --uninstall
4.
Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings
-- get the nice and reliable nvidia driver back in
try rebooting, if you have your display back, then you wont need to do these next steps
go redo the starting steps and step 1 to get back into a working root
5.
Code:
sudo mv /etc/x11/xorg.conf /etc/x11/xorg.conf.old
6.
Code:
sudo nvidia-xconfig
this should get your x display back in order if it does not so automatically, i shy away from making this required because theres something in the back of my head that tells me those 2 lines might actually cause a problem, oh well
if you find a problem with this (or if you actually managed to get the 310 driver working) please tell me
also, i will most likely try to get this into the tutorials section, but i want to refine it here first
